The Story

A house, a locked office, and a guest who never leaves before dark

Carol planned to sign the papers, sell her aunt's guesthouse in Lisbon, and fly home in two weeks. Then she found a notebook written in code, a locked office with the key on the wrong side of the door, and a guest who never leaves before dark.

A stranger wants to buy the house for more money than it is worth, and Carol needs to know why.

The book has 8 chapters and about 11,000 words, and it is written for readers at B1 level and above.

Why I Wrote It

I needed a way to hear the words I was reading

I am learning Thai, and reading in Thai has helped me learn much faster. One of my biggest problems is that I could not tell how a native speaker says a word I had read. You have to know how to say the words you learn, and I could not find a good source for that in Thai.

So I built that source in English, for you. It is a story with my own voice reading every part, so you never have to guess how a word sounds.

How You Learn With It

Read it, hear it, tap it, practice it

I read every sentence to you

You hear how a native speaker says every word, with real rhythm and stress. That is what you are missing when you only read, and it is the sound you want to copy when you speak.

Every word is tappable

Tap any word you do not know and you get a simple meaning and an example. The dictionary holds more than a thousand words, so you can keep reading instead of stopping to look things up somewhere else.

The idioms are explained

The orange phrases are idioms, which are phrases native speakers use that do not translate word for word. The book has about 50 of them, and I explain every one so you understand what people really mean.

Small pieces, then practice

Each chapter is broken into three short parts. Interactive questions after each part help you remember what you read and guess what happens next. Then every chapter has a practice page where the key words come back in a new short story.

Why a Mystery

You learn more from a story you want to finish

You care what happens next, so you keep reading. The story keeps coming back to its clues, so the language around those clues returns again and again. You read closely, because you want to solve it.

You also use English to think and to decide, which trains a skill you need at work, at the doctor, and with your friends. You learn what people mean, not only what they say. And you remember the words because they belong to moments in the story.

One book will not make you fluent, and I will not promise that. It will give you a story you want to finish, a way to hear every word, and 11,000 words of real English to learn from.
